Sunday School and Christian Education for All Ages

Christian education is an essential part of the life of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bridgeport, Nebraska. Each generation needs to hear the Scriptures, learn the Christian faith, and receive the language by which the Church confesses Jesus Christ. Sunday School gives children, youth, and adults an opportunity to grow in the knowledge of God’s Word within the life of the congregation.

Jesus Himself welcomed children and placed them within the hearing and care of His Church. In Mark 10:14 He says, “Suffer the little children to come unto me; forbid them not: for to such belongeth the kingdom of God.” Christian education therefore does not treat children as future Christians waiting until adulthood. Baptized children belong among God’s people and need the same Gospel, prayer, teaching, and pastoral care as every other member of the Church.

Learning the Foundations of the Christian Faith

Sunday School introduces and reinforces the central teachings of Holy Scripture. Students learn the biblical narrative of creation, fall, promise, redemption, and restoration, always with Jesus Christ at the center. They also become familiar with the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, Holy Baptism, Confession, and the Sacrament of the Altar.

Luther’s catechisms have served the Church for centuries precisely because they present these truths clearly and memorably. The Large Catechism explains that catechetical instruction concerns what every Christian needs to know, and Luther urges families to teach these foundational parts diligently to the young. Christian education therefore belongs not only in the classroom, but also in the home, where parents and children pray, read Scripture, sing hymns, and speak together about the faith.

Education That Continues Throughout Life

Christian learning does not end with childhood or confirmation. Adults also need continuing instruction in Scripture, doctrine, prayer, vocation, and the Christian life. For this reason, St. Paul’s understands Sunday School and Bible study as part of a lifelong pattern of hearing and learning God’s Word.

St. Paul’s seeks to provide Christian education that is substantial without being inaccessible. Students are encouraged to ask questions, learn the vocabulary of the faith, understand why the Church teaches what it does, and see how biblical doctrine shapes daily life. The aim is not simply to accumulate religious information, but to know Christ more deeply and to be prepared to confess the faith with clarity and confidence.
