The Word And Sacrament Are Still The Right Answer

Meeting Today’s Needs with God’s Unchanging Gifts

Modern society offers remarkable opportunities, but it also brings confusion, isolation, anxiety, fractured relationships, and uncertainty about what can finally be trusted. The Church does not meet these realities by continually reinventing its message. As an LCMS congregation in Bridgeport, Nebraska, St. Paul’s believes that the deepest needs of every generation are met through the same gifts Christ has entrusted to His Church: His Word and Sacraments.

The Gospel addresses something deeper than temporary circumstances. It speaks to our estrangement from God, our guilt, our mortality, and our need for reconciliation. The Augsburg Confession declares that sinners “are freely justified for Christ’s sake, through faith” and receive forgiveness because Christ “by His death, has made satisfaction for our sins.” (Augsburg Confession, Article IV) This is not simply a sixteenth-century theological idea. It is the abiding Christian answer to the human need for forgiveness and peace with God.

Faith Comes Through the Means God Has Given

The Lutheran Church speaks of Word and Sacrament as the Means of Grace because God has attached His promises to these external gifts. The Augsburg Confession teaches that the ministry of preaching and administering the Sacraments was instituted so that faith may be given, adding that “through the Word and Sacraments, as through instruments, the Holy Ghost is given.” (Augsburg Confession, Article V)

The Formula of Concord likewise teaches that God works through His holy Word as it is preached or read and through the Sacraments used according to His institution. It states that through these means God desires “to call men to eternal salvation, draw them to Himself, and convert, regenerate, and sanctify them.” The Church therefore does not need to search for a more fashionable spiritual technology. Christ has already given what His people need.

A Word of Truth in a Culture of Competing Voices

Our society gives people access to more opinions than any previous generation could have imagined. Yet an abundance of voices does not necessarily produce certainty. Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17, ASV). The Church serves her neighbors by speaking that Word clearly rather than reshaping it according to whichever ideas happen to be popular.

This does not make confessional Lutheranism indifferent to the struggles of contemporary people. Quite the opposite: because the Gospel is true, it can be spoken with compassion into grief, guilt, loneliness, family difficulties, suffering, fear, and death. The Church does not merely offer advice for improving life; she proclaims Christ, who forgives sinners and promises resurrection and eternal life.
